Title: The FBI Story: A Report to the People
Author: Don Whitehead - Don Whitehead was an American journalist. Among his other achievements, Whitehead was awarded the Medal of Freedom. In 1950 Whitehead won the George Polk Award for wire service reporting; in 1951 he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting; and in 1952 he won a second Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting., Foreword by J. Edgar Hoover - John Edgar Hoover was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and perhaps the most controversial person to ever hold the position. Most historians agree that Hoover had a consistent record of violating the civil rights of American citizens. The FBI became defined under Hoover's leadership, and while it sometimes did serve the public interest - Hoover helped establish a centralized fingerprint database and forensic laboratory - the Bureau also attempted to silence, blackmail, and intimidate political dissidents and Civil Rights Era leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.

This first printing of Don Whitehead's "The FBI Story: A Report to the People," bears the signature of the notorious first Director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, who also contributed the foreword to this text. In perhaps the most sympathetic book ever written on the FBI by someone who was not actively working for it, Whitehead describes the Bureau as "A stirring American adventure of pioneering on the frontiers of law enforcement and national security" during an era in which the FBI would become infamous for its civil rights abuses and illegal campaigns to harass and blackmail Civil Rights Leaders.
Condition / Notes: This volume shows nicely displaying only a typical range of age and wear indications. There are some minor signs of rubbing and toning on the boards. The binding is firm and solid. There is some light age-toning on the pages though the text itself remains clear and legible throughout the book. Hoover's signature appears in blue ink on the fly-leaf.
