Description
Extremely finely carved small wooden box with sliding top which opens to reveal a shaped compartment, likely for a scent or snuff bottle. Beautiful warm oily patina to exterior. Top with well-carved peony flower against a background of blossoms. The two longer sides each have a carved harbor scene, with ships on waves and houses and trees on shore. One short end has a carving of citron, the other of a branch of peaches. Perhaps most charming is a somewhat naive and very cheerful harbor scene pricked into the base. Age related cracks but still sound. Late Ming-early Qing Dynasty. Approx. 3 3/4" x 2 1/8" x 1".
