Beautiful paperweight of dark pink color. Its design shows like a wave of the sea covering a mountain or elevation. Caithness Glass is a Scottish company of artistic glassware. It was established in Wick, Caithness, Scotland in 1961 by Robin Sinclair, 2nd Viscount Thurso (but since 2006 is in Crieff, Perthshire). The company was created to help create additional employment in the face of continued decline in local fisheries and agriculture and also to take advantage of the easy availability of sand for glass making in Caithness. However, the local sand was unsuitable for the manufacture of transparent glass (since its high content of iron would make the glass turn green). The company soon specialized in the manufacture of glass paperweights, as well as some ornamental glassware. The firm also became known for providing the annual trophy for the BBC Mastermind television show. The company was awarded a Royal Warrant by the Queen Mother in 1968. Initially, the manufacturing was only in Wick, with a second facility that opened in Oban in 1969 and Perth in 1979. In 1981, Caithness Glass bought the historic London firm James Powell and Sons, also known as Whitefriars Glass, but the London factory was closed. The company's headquarters and paperweight manufacturing were established in Perth since 1995, which resulted in the closure of the original Wick base and, therefore, cut off the physical connection with Caithness. Caithness Glass entered the receivership in 2004. It was purchased by the owners of Edinburgh Crystal, but again entered receivership in 2006. It was purchased (out of receivership) in October 2006 by Dartington Crystal and continues to manufacture and sell paperweight of glass (as of 2014). The factories in Wick, Oban and Perth were closed and replaced by a smaller operation and a visitor center in Crieff. Measure 3"in
