New World, Colombia, ca. 1800 CE. A well-preserved example of a gold coin from the reign of the Spanish king Charles IIII (reigned 1788-1808) from Colombia. One side shows a bust of the king, the other the royal arms of Spain. These coins are famously found in pirate shipwrecks and are known as doubloons. During the Spanish Colonial era, Spanish coins were very popular in the New World. They were also known as the gold doubloon and were minted in 1, 2, 4, and 8 escudo denominations.
