Artist: Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) Title: Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) The Night Scene Series: 'A Rainy Night at Kudan' #1242 Series: The Night Scene Series Publisher: Hasegawa Date: c1910-1920 Medium: Woodblock Print Size/Format: 10" x 7.25"/Chuban
The Night Scene Series: 'A Rainy Night at Kudan' #1242 It depicts a silhouetted rain scene just as evening turns to night. Several travelers are making their way through a square by lantern light. A large stone gate houses a bright lighthouse-type lantern. This print was published by Hasegawa-Nishinomiya, c1910-20's. It is an early edition on thick paper, which did not have any seals. It measures 10" x 7.25". It is in very good condition with just slight generalized toning, and paper residue on the upper verso from its placement in an album. This print comes from a collection in Connecticut, with many of this series having handwritten Christmas greetings, dated 1925. These were stored in an album for nearly 100 years. The Night Scenes series of twenty-one chuban prints illustrates evening views evocative of traditional Japan in a limited palette of sepia or blue originally issued in the 1910s, although Nishinomiya seems to have continued to produce the simple nocturnes in the same format into the 1920s. The collaborative series included the work of Koho Shoda (1871-1946), Yoshimune Arai (1873-1945), Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), Suzuki Gyosui (1898-?) and Kobayashi Eijiro (1870-1946). A 1920s catalogue issued by Hasegawa-Nishinomiya illustrates each of the twenty-one designs with titles.
