Description
TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Swisserland. Mont Blanc, nearly three miles above the level of the sea.'
This large, fascinating map depicts "Swisserland", the Republic of the Swiss, or the Old Swiss Confederacy, a precursor to the modern state of Switzerland, as it had been up to 1798. The map was engraved in 1814 (this date is printed on the map), but published in 1817. The borders as shown exclude Geneva, which had been annexed by Napoleon. Geneva and surrounding territory were admitted to the Swiss Confederacy following the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The south eastern borders of the country differ from the modern borders of Switzerland in that they include the Free State of the Three Leagues (Freistaat der Drei Bünde), an associate of the Old Swiss Confederacy, which eventually coalesced into the Swiss canton of Graubünden. At the bottom is a fine view of Mont Blanc.
