The Circumcision in the Stable (B. 47; H. 274; New Holl. 280), 1654 Etching, watermark possibly of Initials, a good impression of New Hollstein’s third state (of five), White and Boon’s first state (of two), with thread margins, framed. 3 11/16in. H x 5 11/16in. W (image); 3 3/4in. H x 5 3/4in. W (sheet) Frame: 14in. H x 15in. W x 1in. L Ex. Coll.: Earl of Aylesford (lugt 58); also inscribed 'G (?) N 46' in ink. * Earl of Aylesford (British, 1786-1859) amassed a superb collection of Rembrandt prints, known for their extraordinary quality and beauty. Lord Aylesford sold his Rembrandts in 1846, and this date may relate to the '46' inscribed on the verso of this sheet. Many works from his collection made their way into the collection of the British Museum, or were sold through Colnaghi and Christie's in London. Condition: a small rust spot, signs of edge glue visible from the back, a soft diagonal handling crease (seen only from the verso), otherwise in good condition.
