Title: Giant engraved mother of pearl shell - Japanese KOI Fish engraving Maker: Designer: Jake Richmond Origin: Indonesia Date/Period: 2016 Materials: Shell, Wood Dimensions: Height: 21.5cm, Width: 28cm
Completely engraved large mother of pearl shell, very intricate. The carving onto the shell is a group of Japanese KOI fish surrounded by lotus flowers. The design is made by designer Jake Richmond from Sooka Interior and has been carved by Balinese craftsmen, who have mastered the art of carving. The shell comes including a black metal stand. The fish symbol has long been associated with abundance and wealth in feng shui. Some of the characteristics associated with the koi include: Good fortune, Success, Prosperity, Longevity, Courage, Ambition and Perseverance. Many of the above described symbolic meanings of koi fish stem from the Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate in which a koi fish swam upstream, through waterfalls and other obstacles to reach the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain was the "Dragon Gate". The legend says that when the koi finally reached the top, it became a dragon, one of the most auspicious creatures in Chinese culture.
