Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A skillfully carved marble relief section featuring the head of a satyr, presented in profile with drilled eyes, a naturalistic nose with drilled nostrils, a furrowed brow, a mustache and full beard, his lips slightly parted, and characteristically pointed ears showing through the drilled curling hair. Satyrs originated in Greek mythology but were also favored by the Romans. Their goatlike features were associated with Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) and his fondness for wine and pleasures of the flesh. Size: 6" W x 5.125" H (15.2 cm x 13 cm); 7.625" H (19.4 cm) on included custom stand.
