Pre-Columbian, south coast of Peru, Proto Nazca (muneca border) and Huari (eagles), ca. 200 BCE to 700 CE. A pair of still-brightly colored textile fragments, woven from camelid fiber. First, a mantle fringe section - called muneca from the Spanish for doll - made of pink, ocher yellow, dark green, navy blue, and pine green thread, from the proto-Nazca period. Second, a band of repeated eagle motifs, from the later Huari, with each eagle differentiated by unique color schemes. Textiles were used in ancient Peru in conjunction with polychrome vessels in ceremonies. They were ritual attire and used as display objects, and ultimately in funerary contexts. Size of larger fragment (eagles): 15.15" W x 2.25" H (38.5 cm x 5.7 cm); size of frame: 21.25" W x 13" H (54 cm x 33 cm)
