Item Details

Description

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A gorgeous and wearable necklace composed of dozens of beads made from chalky faience, white shell fragments, stone beads, and glinting glass. The beads are presented in a myriad of cylindrical, ovoid, discoid, and spherical forms, with two of the beads exhibiting incised linear motifs, some of which are lined with a chalky white substance. The central bead is a large carnelian sphere with warm vermilion veining, and two halves of a modern silver-plated barrel clasp cap either end. A beautiful composition ready to be worn for any social outing! Size (necklace): 22.75" L (57.8 cm); size (largest bead): 0.65" W (1.7 cm).

Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. All beads are ancient while stringing and silver-plated components are modern. Some beads have minor nicks and light abrasions, with some weathering film to glass beads, and fading to glaze coloration on faience beads, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
