Title: 1880 Vintage SPODE 8.25" LUNCH PLATE* Molded GROUSE*Hand Painted & Signed* Heavy Liquid Gold Edging. Origin: UK Date/Period: 1850 to 1880 Materials: Bone China Size: 8.25 ins
SPODE, the great English China company from Stoke-on Trent, produced this 8" LUNCH PLATE between 1850 and 1880. We also know it was produced for the American market and specifically for SPAULDING & CO. of CHICAGO. See the photo of the back view. The pattern is called GROUSE and is pattern number 3090. It is unusal for several reasons. First the design is hand painted and signed by the Artist C.J.Weaver. secondly the Pair of grouse have been raised up above the rest of the plate so stand out more because of this. Then lastly but far from least is the stunning 1inch Gold rim design. It appears to be hand gilded in liquid gold and would have been a time consumming application. Also expensive. I have only ever seen this one example of this pattern. A great Display piece.
