Greenville County, South Carolina, 1820-1840, descended in the Jones/Ware family. A previous owner acquired this cupboard from a direct descendant of Thomas Edwin Ware (1806-1873), an infamous South Carolinian known as much for his service to his state as a Representative and Senator as he is for shooting and killing his father-in-law, Adam Jones, during a domestic dispute in 1853. Ware was subsequently tried and convicted of manslaughter but received a pardon from Governor John L. Manning. The house built by Jones in 1824 was inherited by his only child and daughter Mary (Ware’s wife); it may have originally contained the cupboard. Before the current owner’s acquisition, the piece remained on the property (still referred to as the ‘old Ware place’) although not in the 1824 house. Built freestanding, the cupboard shares similarities with work often executed ‘in situ’. Furthermore, the molding profiles and the manner in which some are combined to create the cornice clearly are the work of an artisan familiar with the production of interior architectural elements such as mantelpieces, door/window surrounds, and wainscoting. Composed entirely of native yellow pine, the cupboard was originally grain-painted with a variety of fanciful motifs. The upper doors retain an original grain painted surface which served to complete the restoration and bring us to the current surface we have today which is exceptionall.
