Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A beautiful amulet of a slender form, hand-carved from a mottled white stone with pale-orange and clear veining throughout. The figure boasts a petite rectangular body with folded wings delineated via the string-cutting technique, an elongated, tab-shaped tail, and an oblong head with an aquiline beak, drilled eyes, and a short crest. The pendant is biconically drilled through the neck for suspension. Though smooth to the touch, this piece has never been polished and thus retains its original white surface caliche.
