AN ANTIQUE SATSUMA ORNATELY DECORATED DRAGON FORM TEAPOT, SIGNED, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912), the tapering ovoid body with one side centering a fan shaped reserve depicting seated maidens wearing fine kimonos instructing children beneath blossoming wisteria vine, enclosed by other various fan form reserves of Immortals, Samurai warriors and maidens at various pursuits, within ornately gilt diapered panels, reversing to similarly detailed fan shaped reserves and diapered panels, flanked by a scaly dragon tail loop handle and a dragon head spout, surmounted by an intricately painted and gilt dome lid with globular finial, opposite an underside centering a black square enclosing hand gold painted Shimazu family mon above nine gilt characters. Height: 6 1/2" Width: 8" Depth: 4 3/8"

Good condition, fine cracqueleur glaze throughout, tiny chip (less 1/8") on rim but hidden by lid, one chip of tip of talon on dragon handle, surface dust buildup throughout, painting and gilding strong and good shape throughout. This teapot was split from 14-6576.
