Description
Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A heavy ceramic bowl with a round body and a projecting, nipple-like spout. Three deep grooves run down the surface of the spout, creating channels for pouring libations - wine, oil, or water. The vessel has a thick rim, a round disc foot, and a deep interior with deposits on the surface suggesting liquid left in it over a long time. The rim shows the remains of leaf-like patterns on its surface and the piece would have once been painted brightly. Size: 9.5" W x 1.95" H (24.1 cm x 5 cm)
