Very rare and unique Cross of the Order of the Templars in Verdello Marble with inlay in French red marble, completely worked and sculpted by hand, coming from an important private collection of Venice. Period 1700. "Non nobis domine, non nobis, sed nomini, tuo da gloriam" is the motto of the Templar Knights of the "Ordo Templi" and means "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name it gives glory". The text is the translation of the median verses of Psalm 113 (Ancient Vulgate) or of the "incipit" of the 115 psalm (according to Hebrew numbering) 114 of the Bible and is also engraved on a base strip that occupies the entire width of the facade of Ca 'Vendramin Calergi on the Grand Canal in Venice. This same inscription is also reported on the windows of the Palazzo Zabarella façade in Padua and on the basement of the parish bell tower of Santa Barbara di Mestre. The inscription "Non nobis domine non nobis" is engraved on a stone set in the Municipality of Salò (BS), on the side facing the lake. The Knights Templar or simply Templars, was one of the first and best known medieval Christian chivalric religious orders. The birth of the order is located in the Holy Land at the center of the wars between Christian and Islamic forces erupted after the first crusade launched in 1096. Around 1118-1119 a handful of knights decided to found the original core of the Templar order, giving themselves the task of ensuring the safety of the many European pilgrims who continued to visit Jerusalem. The order was made official in 1129, assuming a monastic rule, with the support of Bernardo di Chiaravalle. The dual role of monks and combatants, which distinguished the Templar Order in the years of its maturity, naturally aroused perplexity in the Christian sphere. Over the course of time the Templar order dedicated itself to agricultural activities, creating a great productive system, and to financial activities, managing the assets of the pilgrims and becoming the most advanced and widespread banking system of the time. In the popular imagination the figure of the Templars remains controversial because of the many legends born between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century that speak of strange rites and a bond never had with the masonry. In reality all these legends are the result of the collective imagination of the cultural movements of the Enlightenment, of romanticism and of Freemasonry who have painted the order of the Templars in such a dull manner without having carried out accurate historical studies and to attack the Catholic Church. Work of great symbolic and religious value, of high workmanship and quality. Medium in size, well proportioned and not too heavy. Optimal if hanging on the wall. The veins of the marble are fantastic, with a graceful patina. Elegant the structure of the emblem, obtained after a long and meticulous craftsmanship of the master sculptors of that period. more unique, rare, exclusive lot.
