SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED SPLIT-BOTTOM SET OF SEVEN SIDE CHAIRS white oak, each two-slat back form with double-weave seat, unique swollen legs joined with box stretcher. Retaining original green-painted surfaces with Neoclassical-style stenciled embellishments. Together with two green-painted rockers from the Burkett shop. Nine pieces total. Attributed to the shop of Joseph Burket, Forestville, Shenandoah Co., VA. Circa 1870. Side chairs 34 1/4" HOA, 14" x 17" seat.
Scattered minor to moderate surface wear and discoloration, losses to seats. Five examples with seat replaced.

Ex-collection of J. Roderick "Roddy" Moore, Ferrum, VA.
Catalogue Note: Joseph Burket (1812-1892) operated a sizable cabinet and chair shop in Forestville, VA from around 1830 to 1885. He produced this distinctive style of chair with sensuous legs and extravagant stenciled decorations from roughly 1865 to 1880. It is likely that his two daughters executed the stenciling on these chairs. See Evans - Come in and Have a Seat, p. 32 for more information.

Condition

Scattered minor to moderate surface wear and discoloration, losses to seats. Five examples with seat replaced.
