Sterett-Gittings Kelsey, American, born 1941, Titled Fencer, a solid bronze sculpture in the form of a fencer lunging with epee in hand and original patina to the bronze, cast in 1976. Kelsey works predominantly in the medium of bronze and her sculptures range in size from a few inches to over thirty feet in height. Often referred to as The New Master of Movement, Kelsey is known for her sculpture depicting dancers, and is widely thought of as one of the leading sculptors working in this field today. Signed KELSEY to the side of the foot and dated 1976. Estimated less than 50 yrs old. American art is visual art and started with colonial art on the East Coast where artists initially relied on Europe trends. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, artists primarily painted portraits, and some landscapes in a style based mainly on English painting. Furniture-makers imitating English styles and similar craftsmen were also established in the major cities, but in the English colonies, locally made pottery remained resolutely utilitarian until the 19th century, with fancy products imported. But in the later 18th century Americans gave the first sign of an emerging force in Western art. In the early 19th century the infrastructure to train artists who began to produce Romantic paintings of American landscapes. The American Revolution produced a demand for patriotic art, especially history painting, while other artists recorded the frontier country. A parallel development taking shape in rural America was the American craft movement, which began as a reaction to the industrial revolution. After World War II, New York replaced Paris as the center of the art world. Since then many American movements have shaped Modern and Postmodern art.
