Description
1869 EXQUISITE Waverly Novels Sir Walter Scott Social Classes Illustrated Set Poetry
“All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.”
― Walter Scott
The Waverley Novels are a long series of novels by Sir Walter Scott. For nearly a century, they were among the most popular and widely read novels in all of Europe. The Novels expressed his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings.
Because Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, the series takes its name from Waverley, the first novel of the series released in 1814. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages.
