Description
William Ralph Watson (American 1881 - 1968); Late Summer Landscape; oil on canvas; 24 x 36 in; framed: 30.25 x 42.5 in; William Ralph Watson (1881-1968) was a devoted painter and winner of several awards in his lifetime. He painted primarily in Connecticut, but also painted around the country when visiting friends. This work captures the myriad color play of sunlight and shadows in the snow-covered marshes of the Skokie River near Glencoe, Illinois and is inscribed in ink on the back of the stretcher, “To My Friend Francis W Peterson “Afternoon in the Sckokies†[sic] Painted on Washington’s Birthday 1929 Near Glencoe Ill.†Watson was known never to sell his works, but frequently gave them as gifts as this inscription attests.
