⁂ First edition of the first French circumnavigation of the globe, which began as an expedition by Bougainville to secure the Falkland Islands (Îles Malouines) and Patagonia for the French. The expedition was also notable for losing only seven out of the two hundred men who began the expedition and for carrying the first woman on a circumnavigation (the mistress of the ship's botanist, disguised as his valet).
