Description
A Greek unpainted Lebes Gamikos, Canosa, ca. 4th - 3rd century BC:
This elegant lebes gamikos is a wedding bowl distinguishable by its high looping handles set on either shoulder. Like the loutrophorous, this vessel would likely have been used to bring water for the ritual bridal bath. Both bride and groom separately marked their departure from their previous existence and entrance into their new life together by bathing in water drawn from specially prescribed sources. Alternatively, the lebes gamikos may have held food for the bride and groom in their bridal chamber.
Dimensions: Height: 5 1/2 inches (14 cm)
Reference No: GP824
