Description
Mid 19th century, 295 x 102 cm, East Anatolia

In this Kurdish rug woven in the East Anatolian province of Erzincan, an area situated north east of Gaziantep and Malatya, the field design consists of four rectangles which alternate in ground colour between pale green and light red; each contains a large cruciform motif and is framed by white borders. The regional differences are evident in both ornamentation and palette. The hooked diamonds so popular in the southern provinces do not occur in this piece, the shapes of the designs are more angular, and the colours are mellower. This rare rug was published by Brüggemann/Böhmer in 1980. – The lower right corner is repiled; otherwise very well preserved, with the original finishes all around.
