Description des Antiquités et Objets d'Art Contenus dans Les Salles du Palais-des-Arts de la Ville de Lyon
Ambroise Comarmond ( 1786 - 1857) was a physician with a great passion for antiquities. He became Conservator of the Bibliothèque of Palais-des-Arts (1837), then Conservator of Archeological Museums of the City of Lyon (1841). The British Museum acquired his personal collection of bronzes and glass for the sum of 1600 pounds in 1851.
This book was from the library of Stephen V. Grancsay (1897 - 1980) Curator of the Department of Arms & Armor at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
F. Dumoulin, 1855. 1st Edition. This is a recovered copy of Description des Antiquités et Objets d’Art by Dr. A. Comarmond, which has a leather spine, with 5 raised bands, decorations and lettering in gold, and marbled green boards. There is some wear, including one bump to the back outside edge, shallow bumps to the corners, and several scuffs to the leather, but the cover (12.25" x 10.25") is in good overall condition, with a straight spine, unfaded gilt, a solid connection to the inside, and with only slight fade to the marbled boards.
The inside, 851 text pages followed by 28 pages of plates, is also in good overall condition. The only attachments are the personal bookplate of Stephen V. Grancsay, the former arms and armor curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a small bound-in slip, in the title spread, referring to the redone cover (demi rel verte). This slip seems to refer to the binder, with the name M. Buttin, but I’ve found no references to that name.
There are a few pencil notations, but almost all pages have none. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are few creases, and no tears of note. There are foxed and otherwise stained pages, most of which is light. Most page faces have no stains. The text is clean and unfaded throughout the book.
The above photos are accurate reflections of the book condition.
