A unique example, the crescent blade and hook with characteristic profiling, surmounted by a long, double-edged blade of robust proportions terminating in an abrupt tip, with high central ridge developing out of the square socket. The head retained to the original octagonal-section oak haft by four inletted straps. Finely etched on both sides with the emblem of Habsburg Spain, the Cruz de Borgona, bearing the Imperial crown, between the FI monogram of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor (r.1558-1564,) and the date 1558 supported by flowering vines and sprigs, all on a ground of flower petals. Dated 1558. Minor wear. Haft with slight warp. Ferdinand I became Holy Roman Emperor when he was 55 years of age and already king of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia. He was crowned in 1558, the same year etched on the halberd, indicating it was made for his coronation and likely carried by his personal guard. Ferdinand I came to the throne at a time when Europe was challenged by both Ottoman invasion and the Protestant Reformation. He was an accomplished statesman, not only relatively liberal in his religious outlook, but a seasoned soldier. He was also a patron of the arts who beautified Vienna and Prague and supported music and painting. The Habsburgs were the first international dynasty, controlling much of Europe and the New World.
