Description
Greece, Kings of Thrace, Lysimachos, 305 to 281 BCE. AV Stater (8.5 grams) Lifetime issue. Diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great right, wearing horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, resting left elbow on shield, transverse spear behind. Cp. Muller 478. Lovely style. Nicely struck both obverse and reverse. 18K. Size: 0.7" W (1.8 cm)
Lysimachos (also Lysimachus) was a Macedonian officer and diadochus, a successor of Alexander the Great, who became a basileus - a king - of Thrace, Asia Minor, and Macedon. Lysimachos's father was friendly with Alexander's father, Philip II, and Lysimachos and Alexander grew up together and were educated together. He served as one of Alexander's bodyguards from 328 BCE and after his death joined with others of his inner circle to divide up his kingdom.
