Description
Pre-Columbian Sinu/Zenu culture (Colombia, 200 BC - 1600 CE). Monumental two-part secondary funeral urn or vessel with a seated figure lid, the figure having an imposing nose ring. These large jars were generally used for food and liquid storage, and sometimes for burial offerings. The figure sits with hands on knees, ridged spine, shoulder blades and hips. The jar itself has raised relief figures on opposite sides towards the top. Measures 8 x 7 inches.
Condition
The seated figure's arms appear to have professional restoration work done, and a repaired crack running from under his left side down to the rim. The jar also shows stress cracks, three distinct cracks towards the bottom, a small one near the rim, and an obvious extensive repair at the rim -- see photographs.
