Item Details
Description
Glazed Redware Figure of a Seated Dog, PA origin, possibly Solomon Miller, Adams County, PA, circa 1850-1890, hand-modeled figure of a dog with applied collar and locket, seated on an oval base with incised and impressed floral motif, including unusual hand-incised stippling to center of blossom. Impressed circle decoration to collar, locket, and bordering the oval base. Incised details to face and paws. Surface of dog decorated with unusual brushed manganese details, the base with manganese-decorated edge, the whole covered in a heavy lead glaze. Depicted with a narrow body, smooth coat, and unusual open ears with pointed tips, this dog may represent a greyhound or whippet. The distinctive brushed application of the manganese on this dog, most evident in the stripe along his back, appears related in style to a number of signed examples of utilitarian redware signed by Adams County, PA potter, Solomon Miller, suggesting him as its maker. Provenance: Recently discovered in Florida. Excellent condition with light wear to muzzle, collar, and one ear, as well as other very minor wear. Glazed surface retains a clean, brilliant luster. H 4 1/2" ; L 4 1/8".
