Description
Bloodletting is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to prevent or cure illness and disease. Bloodletting. Blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as “humours” that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health. While fleams were certainly used on humans they were primarily developed for veterinary use. A fleam would be placed over the vein (most commonly the jugular or saphenous) and struck with a fleam stick. This would ideally result in rapid pen- etration of the vein. Once the desired blood was drained from the patient, the oper- ator would place a pin through the edges of the incision. A figure eight of tail hair or thread was then placed over the pin to retain closure. Fleam 1: Cow horn handle with brass spacer; three blades, each marked RODGERS CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY 3.125 in. Fleam 2: brass with cow horn spacer. Three blades marked HODGE. The brass face is crudely etched with the owners initials GM 3.5 in. Fleam 3: Brass fleam with three unmarked blades. This example features a thumb lancet that most agree was specifically for humans, allowing rural families to bleed the animals and family members alike. 3.125 in.
