19th - century ceramic netsuke of a smiling Jurojin (one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, that of longevity and wisdom) sitting next to one of his constant companions - a Manchurian crane (symbol of longevity). Bizen ware made in Okayama Prefecture - one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, characteristic fine brown clay. Wonderfully conveyed close friendship of two characters, perfectly captured facial expression, great depiction of his beard and feathers of the bird. Beautiful wear and patina, in excellent condition. Height 1 13/16 inches.
