Description
Genuine Antique Engraving dated 1760.

Authentic Portrait of Gottfried Daniel Hoffmann (1719-1780), engraved by Jacob Andreas Friedrich Jr. [1714-1779], dated 1760, signed in plate "Jac.Andr. Fridrich Ser.Duc.Wurt.Sculptor auticus. Sculps. Aug. &ind. 1760."; engraved inscription: "Godofredus Daniel Hoffman / J.V.D. Sacri Caesarei Palatii / comes, Juris Publici et Feudalis, Professor Tubingensis."

Jakob Andreas Friedrich, the Junger, also known as Jacob Andreas Fridrich [1714-1779] German engraver, has the same name as his father [1684-1751]. However, Jacob Andreas Friedrich, the Elder normally signed his engravings "I.A.Fridrich." According to the signature, Friedrich junior was the court engraver of the Duke of Wuerttemberg/ Stuttgart. Because of his failing sight, he had to leave Stuttgart for Nueremberg, where he went completely blind c. 1775 and was unable to continue his work [Ref.:v. Stetten. Br. 9. u. 10. v. Obermayr Mspt.]. His brother Bernhard was also a talented copper engraver and went ca. 1740 to Regensburg. Ref.:v. Stetten Kunstgesch. S.404'.

Gottfried Daniel Hoffmann (19 Febr. 1719, Tuebingen - 31 Aug. 1780) was a German lawyer, author and professor at the University of Tuebingen. Hoffmann was registered as lawyer at Tuebingen Hofgericht. In November 1741 he became an associate professor of law at Tuebingen; 1743 Professor at the Collegium illustrious. He received his doctorate on May 15, 1745 at the Faculty of Law, and on April 9, 1747 he became ordinary professor at the State University. He published several books on Law and Ethics.

About the A.L. Collection:

We acquired the "A.L." collection of engravings in London. It contains over one hundred prints created by leading German engravers of the eighteenth century. The anonymous collector "A.L." cut several of these prints to design and past on a larger laid paper. In 1762, A.L. bound his collection into one volume and provided the title in German, "Sammlung von Bildnussen hoher Potentaten vornehmer Herren beruehmter Gelehrten und anderer verdienten Maenner. Gesammelt von A.L., 1762." [Collection of Pictures of High Potentates, Gentlemen, Famous Scholars and Other Distinguished Men, collected by A.L. 1762.]

Without doubts, A.L. can be considered as a German collector. Most of the engravings have a handwritten number at the upper right corner. We provide this number in our item description as the reference number of the A.L. Collection. The fact that this collection was bound in 1762 provides additional warranty that the prints are authentic and created prior to 1762.

Certifications of Authenticity will be included upon buyers request.

Artwork will be mailed unframed, well packaged.
