Item Details
Description
Raymond Chandler Contract Signed for Playback with Four Others Signed by His Estate. All contracts are two pages, 8" x 13", London; and are agreements with the Livros do Brasil publishing firm for the Portuguese translations of Playback, dated 1959; The Lady in the Lake, dated 1958; The Big Sleep, dated 1964; The Little Sister, dated 1960; and The High Window, dated 1959. The other contracts are signed by Helga Greene as owner of his estate. Greene had been Chandler's literary agent and had inherited his estate after his death on March 26, 1959.

Raymond T. Chandler (1888-1959) was a novelist and screenwriter, who became a writer after he found himself out of work due to the Great Depression. His most famous works include The Long Goodbye, The Little Sister, and The Big Sleep, which have all been adapted into films. He also assisted in writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train, although it is said that Chandler and Alfred Hitchcock fought so much that the two stopped speaking to each other.

Condition: All documents are lightly toned, with the two pages stapled together, and two holes punched along the left vertical margin. One of the estate contracts has plastic reinforcements adhered over the punched holes.
