Lorrin Andrews. Vocabulary of Words in the Hawaiian Language. [Honolulu and] Lahainaluna: Press of the High School, 1836. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies. Octavo (8.7"x 5.5"). [i]-iv, 132 pages. Contemporary red marbled wrappers. First forty pages of text printed in Honolulu, with remainder printed in Lahainaluna at Hawaii's first printing press. Sold at Lahainaluna High School for one dollar each. Roughly 5,700 Hawaiian words are defined with occasional example sentences; includes a glossary of loanwords. "One of the most important works issued by the Lahainaluna Press, Lorrin Andrews' 'Vocabulary' is perhaps more accurately the pioneer attempt to provide a dictionary of the Hawaiian language," Forbes, Hawaiian National Bibliography: 1780-1900, 983.
Condition: Housed in custom phase box. Insect damage to wrappers, extending into first and last gatherings; backstrip mostly eaten away, though sewing still sound. Some slight edge wear, bumping; regular age toning of pages. Very good despite insect tracks.
