Of the very few known limited editions, that Rolex has produced and authorized, this Cellini Ref: 3612 Mexican Peso coin watch is quite possibly the most elusive and desired for a broad range of different collectors. This timepiece, manufactured in 1971, was made to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the - the treaty that established Mexican independence from Spain. With only 10 examples produced, they very rarely come to market publicly. This example is elevated above others by not only its original presentation box, but also its original strap and Rolex signed buckle.

The Mexican Gold 50 Peso is the largest of the Mexican Gold coins at 38mm, which gives this timepiece a strong wrist presence compared to other collectible coin watches. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and this Gold 50 Peso is often referred to as the "Centenario". Issued by the Mexican Mint, La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, between 1921 and 1931 and then again from 1943 to 1972, the majority of Mexican 50 Pesos minted were restrikes of the 1947 coin. The Mexican Mint was the first mint in the Americas, and has consistently represented Mesoamerican and Colonial history on their Gold coins. The 50 Peso design is the Gold Eagle perched on a cactus with the Mexican National Coat of Arms on the obverse side. The reverse, which is also the face side of this timepiece, has the classic Winged Victory, the "Angel of Independence" design, giving a dramatic aesthetic when worn on the wrist. This is arguably one of the most important examples of numismatic themed watchmaking to come to market.
