Pre-1882 RACINE SILVER PLATE COMPANY Pickle Castor with Fork, Triple Plate

Nice pressed glass Victorian castor with pickle fork and handle for passing around the table.  An item in every Victorian home.  Racine Silver Plate Company was located on the northeast corner of Second and Main Streets. There was a fire on May 5,1882, that destroyed seven square blocks of Downtown Racine.  When it was rebuilt, the name was changed to Rockford Silver Plate Co.  So we can easily date this piece to earlier than 1882, therefore more than 136 years old!!!!!  Not as gaudy as most Victorian, so this piece will serve well today.  10 inches to top of handle.  Whether double plate, triple plate, quadruple plate or extra plate, these terms imply that the thickness of the layer of silver on the surface (or a portion of the surface) of the piece is thicker than “normalâ€. The primary purpose of the extra thickness is to increase the useful life of the piece. It may be a very thin layer, but it will make a difference.
