Description
This lot consists of a fine art print on paper, Hand Signed "Edv. Munch" at lower right. Image depicts two feminine figures on a shoreline; one is in white, one in black. The eye is immediately drawn to the woman in white. We can only see the back of her long brown tresses. Her hands have fallen to her sides as she stands facing a dark and bewildering body of water. We see that she has been met by a cloaked figure in black, who crouches at her side and seems fully disguised in shadow. Could this figure in black be a helpful wisewoman, or perhaps the dark side of the white figure's psyche? Munch was known for symbolically weaving psychological tenets into his art. This piece particularly echoes themes of water in Munch's work, like "The Scream" (1893), as well as themes of distance or indecision, as can be seen in Munch's 1896 print, "Two Human Beings (The Lonely Ones)". Done in the evocative Symbolism style of Edvard Munch (Norwegian, 1863-1944). Unframed piece measures approximately 8" x 9.75"
