Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, south coast of Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. Far less known but certainly no less talented than their Nazca neighbors, the Paracas artisans were superb weavers and craftspeople. This extremely rare textile panel was woven of camelid fibers in pink, brown and gold. It features a solitary shaman looking forward with his arms out to his proper left holding a staff of power in his outstretched hands. He wears a colorful cape and large headdress. His face appears to have tattooing and he wears elaborate earrings. A rare and fascinating example of early textile art! Ancient panel itself: Size: 3.75" W x 7.5" H (9.5 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, ex Ferdinand Anton collection, Germany (Ferdinand Anton was a famous author of Pre Columbian texts.)
