Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. Wonderful and quite rare stone amulet or bead in the form of a man. His pose is such that it is difficult to discern exactly what is transpiring, but he appears to be in profile save his face, left leg curled beneath him, arms to his left as if astride some object. It is also possible this depicts some form of human malady or disfigurement - a theme very popular in Pre-Columbian art. He is highlighted in added red pigment, possibly cinnabar - a form of Mercury Sulfide and can be very poisonous if ingested in quantity. Size: .875" W x 1.25" H (2.2 cm x 3.2 cm)
