Description
Roman Empire, Northern Levant or Egypt, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A stout deep-green translucent free-blown ink well with a dimpled bottom and smooth pontil, a stable base with rounded shoulders rolling into a slightly pinched area at the base of the thick tubular neck, a flared rim with a rounded lip and flattened top, and a rounded mouth opening presumably for excess ink to easily flow back into vessel. A small portion of the original bronze applicator remains inside the inkwell surrounded by an accretion of sediment and possible ancient ink remnants. A fiery display of rainbow iridescence adorns all surfaces of this beautiful example of Roman glasswork. Size: 2.5" W x 2.75" H (6.4 cm x 7 cm)
