Artist Biography: Andre Gisson (1921 - 2003, American) was born Anders Gittelson in 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. Stylistically, his work is aligned with the 19th century French Impressionist painters and as an artistic persona, Gisson claimed to be French and to have been born in 1910. While the majority of his life was spent in Westport, Connecticut, he did live in New York, Georgia, and France, and travelled throughout Europe. Gisson graduated from the Pratt Institute, New York and then joined the United States Army during World War II where he attained the rank of Captain. While in Europe, he continued his studies and then resumed his career as a professional artist once returning to New York. He is known for rendering Parisian street scenes, landscapes, and still life paintings with an attention to color, hue, and atmosphere. Gisson exhibited nationally in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Texas, and California, also in overseas locations including London, Paris, and Tokyo. Public Institutions which have their work in their permanent collections include: Smithsonian Institution, D.C. and the Triton Museum of Art, in North Carolina. Among his private collectors were President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham. Condition: Free of chips, cracks and restoration.
