Details: This lot features an antique French Tissue Diableries Stereograph. The image is titled Les Pilues Du Diable (The Pills of the Devil), and depicts a skeleton crowd watching Satan give a pot bellied aristocrat a pill.

Tissue stereographs, or French tissues as they are more commonly known, were a creative twist on the more typical albumen stereoviews. Using thin translucent paper backed by colored tissue, the cards can be viewed back-lit to reveal a shift in color and at times meaning, Among French Tissues, the Diableries series contains some of the most interesting and complex imagery found in stereoviews. This is in part due to the painstaking process their creation involved. The scenes depicted in these Diableries were made in clay, on a tabletop, with amazing skill, by a small bunch of gifted sculptors, and then photographed with a stereo camera. The resulting stereo pair of prints was made on thin albumen paper, and watercolours were applied to the back of the prints. The eyes of each skeleton were then pricked out with a sharp instrument, and small pieces of red varnish, were applied to the back of the pricked holes. Behind this pair of prints was added a layer of tissue paper, which hid the painted rear surface of the prints.
