Item Details
Description
Greek, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. An impressively large bronze situla, from the Latin for bucket or pail, a term used for a variety of elaborate bucket-shaped vessels from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages. This one presents a cylindrical, drum-like body on a rounded base with a dramatically incurved shoulder that leads to a tubular neck which in turn rises to a flat, broad rim. Twin handles - both with two delineated channels - join rim to upper body with an elaborate display of barbell-shaped and peg-like attachments to the upper termini and fish-shaped lower termini. The azure blue and teal hues of the patina are particularly striking! Size: 15" H (38.1 cm); 15.75" H (40 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
