Roman, Imperial Period, ca. first half of the 3rd century CE. A majestic depiction of a male figure, perhaps of royal birth from the Severan period, the torso finely sculpted from Crema Valencia marble – a creamy yellow variant with red-orange veining – and the head from soft white marble. Broad shoulders don a cuirass with pleated shoulder flaps, with a flowing paludamentum draped atop and fastened over the right shoulder with a domed brooch. The left-facing head presents a serene visage defined by heavy-lidded almond eyes and drilled pupils surmounted by thin brows, an angular nose above rounded lips and a dimpled chin, well-defined ears, and a contoured neck line, all beneath a thick coiffure of wavy hair with recessed corners in front. Presented atop a carved marble block and socle, this is a beautiful and stunning portrait bust from the Roman Empire! Size: 11.625" W x 15.9" H (29.5 cm x 40.4 cm).

Restoration to back of right shoulder and back of neck with small chips along break lines. Head repaired at chest, neck, cheek, and nose, with a small brass stabilization pin inserted into nose and light plaster along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, chips and losses to face, ears, eyes, verso, and base, with some yellowing to marble, and light roughness across some surfaces. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas.
