Media: Oil on canvas
Title: 'Berning Mill in Wright County'
Date: 1930s
Measurements: 19.5" x 25.5" sight size, and 26.5" x 33" x 2.25" overall including framing.
Condition: Good condition overall. Some soiling, frame has much wear and has been painted gold at some point. (appears to have originally been white).
Notes: From a northern California collection. Many labels verso.
Provenance: Ex-WPA collection. Many labels verso. (see images).
About the artist: Arnold Ness Klagstad, (American 19898-1954), was an American painter of Norwegian descent working in the Minneapolis area of Minnesota. Klagstad studied with his father, a noted artist, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Fountainbleau School of Art in Paris. Klagstad became known during his lifetime as a painter of farms and buildings in rural settings, especially of gain storage buildings. Klagstad was heavily involved in the Federal Works Projects Administration and the WPA in Minnesota. He regularly exhibited in his local area including with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and one of his works from the late 1930s was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
