Description
Circa 1740. Oil on canvas, unsigned, sitter attribution on verso, 29 x 24 in., framed. Elizabeth McIntosh Royall was the wife of the wealthy early American landowner Isaac Royall Jr., whose land bequest in 1779 eventually led to the founding of Harvard Law School in 1817. Both Elizabeth and Isaac had their portraits painted by Robert Feke and John Singleton Copley. This early portrait of Elizabeth was probably painted around her marriage to Issac in 1738.; From the Estate of Charles E.
