Moche Copper Disc with Danglers
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 400 to 800 CE. A large, round copper disc with an intricate openwork design, made to be sewn onto clothing and worn decoratively in the grave. Inside a broad border of smooth, flat copper is a standing lord with a face that juts outward underneath a large headdress. He is surrounded by what looks like birds and squirrels, with a ring of spirals surrounding them. Five dangling, diamond-shaped pieces of copper hang from the front of the disc (there were probably originally six). Imagine how this piece would have looked when new, its coppery color flashing in the sun. Size: 4" W (10.2 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Millburn, New Jersey, USA collection
