Description
Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A beautifully executed carving in limestone depicting two figures. One is seated, hair in a top knot, dressed in finery, with massive round earrings, a thick pectoral, and a large bracelet. He wears a skirt with a narrow belt. One of his arms reaches out to touch the other figure, who appears to be a dancer or performer of some kind, posed with one leg and arm raised, holding a large ball-shaped item. This figure, too, wears elaborate clothing and jewelry, including earrings that dangle over the shoulders. Both are posed together on a long, low pedestal. Size: 4.2" W x 5.25" H (10.7 cm x 13.3 cm)
During the Majapahit Empire, the buildings of East Java - both religious and secular - were decorated with friezes made from stone and terracotta. These depict scenes of stylized human figures, often engaging in everyday activities; they are always depicted in movement, as they are here.
