Description
Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 700 to 330 BCE. A large cast bronze bird finial, portrayed with a sharply downcast beak and elongated, conical body. The bird appears to be a stylized passerine. It perches atop a tall, hollow, cuboid post whose surface is decorated with stippled motifs. There are no wings, but open terminals with raised borders on the sides of the creature, perhaps where there were once attached wings. Deeply inset eyes may have once contained precious stones or other metals. What would this charming bird have decorated. A chariot? A piece of furniture? It is fun to speculate. Size: 4.1" W x 3.7" H (10.4 cm x 9.4 cm); 4.45" H (11.3 cm) on included custom stand.
