Description
A REGÉNCE (1715-1723) STYLE GILTWOOD AND GESSO MARBLE TOP PIER TABLE, BY MAISON JEANSELME, FRENCH, NAPOLEON III PERIOD (1852-1870), the serpentine, cookie corner, highly figured bréche violet marble, over an arching skirt carved with a mask of Medusa, surrounded by a shell medallion within scrolling flower tendrils and addorsed acanthus scrolls, raised on shell, bellflower, and acanthus leaf relief carved knee cabriole legs at front and tapered, molded, rectangular, Baroque style legs at back with leafy shell and bellflower relief carved capitals, ending in molded block feet, on tapered, scrolled floret shaped feet, joined by an "X" form carved stretcher with relief floret medallions, centering a raised, pierced double "C" scroll leafy profusion, base verso with partial ink stamp "Jeanselme Fils Godin et Cie. - Ebenisterie, Sieges et Tapiss...Marais;" this stamp used for production from 1863-1871. Height: 34 /4" Width: 35" Depth: 21 1/4" NOTE: Maison Jeanselme is an important family of cabinetmakers in activity from 1824 to 1930, consisting of two brothers, the son of one of them and the grandson. In 1847, Jeanselme bought the Jacob collection and from that time became the supplier of the furniture-storage under Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III.
Condition
Some surface wear, scratches, scuffs and losses, mild dulling of marble polish, some orange staining, a loss at back corner of marble, some losses of the gilt and gesso throughout, most wear and losses are on legs, and some at mask, , but overall in very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
